The Tooling Design Engineer will assist and support the Engineering team through the design of tooling used in the manufacturing process. This role involves providing technical expertise in CNC machining, tooling design, and product design to enhance manufacturing efficiency and product quality.
Essential Functions
- Tooling Design: Use SolidWorks and Solid CAM to design tooling that supports the manufacturing process, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Project Completion: Ensure timely completion of design projects based on engineering and production schedules.
- Tooling and Product Inspections: Perform inspections of tooling and products to ensure compliance with quality standards set by Madsen Steel and/or clients.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve tooling and product design, utilizing knowledge of fabrication processes, assembly methods, quality control standards, and materials.
Competencies
- Computer-Aided Design (CAD) & CAM: Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks) and CAM (Solid CAM) software for tooling and product design.
- Lean Manufacturing & Quality Systems: Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, quality control systems, and continuous improvement processes.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to understand and apply mechanical engineering concepts in tooling design.
- Problem-Solving/Analysis: Strong analytical skills for diagnosing issues and implementing effective solutions.
- Interpretation of Mechanical Drawings: Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, designs, and models accurately.
- Mathematics: Strong mathematical skills for calculations related to design and manufacturing processes.
Basic Qualifications
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or SolidCAM software.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple activities and projects simultaneously.
- Experience in the fabrication of metal products is a plus.
- Ability to identify areas for process improvement within Madsen Steel operations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with G-code programming for CNC machines.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent planning, time management, and organizational abilities.
Work Environment
This position generally operates in a professional office environment. However, the employee will also work on the plant floor and may be exposed to a variety of conditions in that setting.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full-time on-site, 40 hours per week.
Travel
Minimal travel (0% to 5%), primarily to vendors or clients.
Preferred Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in design engineering or mechanical engineering.
A minimum of two years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
